The Village Tavern
Mt. Pleasant bar and music venue the Village Tavern closed down in late July after an eight-year run in the Crickentree Village (1055 Johnnie Dodds Blvd.). Word has it that the new owners, David Warren and John Morlan, have already started refurbishing the facility and plan to keep the venue’s name and reopen in November.

The Village Tavern established itself as a hub for original indie music, booking anything from rock, punk, and metal, and to country, hip-hop, and electronica. Stay tuned for updates.

Songwriter Competition at Muddy Waters, 5/13

Posted by T. Ballard Lesemann on Sat, May 9, 2009 at 12:44 PM

The newly-established Palmetto Acoustic group will present the first of the monthly "Open Mic Challenge" at the West Ashley Muddy Waters on Wed, May 13. Over the last year, Palmetto Acoustic has presented free acoustic showcases every other week at this venue series, highlighting a mix of local and visiting singer/songwriters performing original music.

c8cc/1241898813-palmettoacousticlogo.jpg Modeled after open mic events held at some of the top listening rooms in Atlanta's Eddie's Attic and Boston's Lizard Lounge, each performer gets a 10-minute slot, and the top three will get an encore set at the end of the night to determine the winner. Guest judges will evaluate the sets with five criteria in mind: songwriting, vocal performance, playing ability, stage presence, and audience response. Local songwriter and guitarist Aaron Levy (of White Rhino) will host.

Advance sign-ups at palacoom@gmail.com. Players may only be signed up for one future Monday time slot at a time. Each act must be limited to three players per act. No guitar effects or amps are allowed. No full drum kits. Performers must check in for their slot 30 minutes prior to their scheduled playing time.

Monthly winners will receive a cash prize and a spot in the bi-annual winners circle event held in November. Start time is 7 p.m.

From Budiroes to Buddy Roe’s Shrimp Shack

Posted by T. Ballard Lesemann on Fri, May 1, 2009 at 1:41 PM

Back in late February, Isle of Palms bar and restaurant Budiroes — a tropical styled tavern and music venue at 1517 Palm Blvd. that served as home to Charleston singer/guitarist Ronnie Johnson for over three years — announced plans to close down on March 7. They regularly booked a variety of live shag and blues bands, DJs, trivia nights, and solo acoustic shows. 50e5/1241196279-buddyroe_s70.jpg

It looks like Johnson and his staff have crossed the Intra-coastal waterway and set up at a new spot at 1528 Ben Sawyer Blvd. (on the way out to Sullivan’s Island from Mt. P) under a slightly different name — Buddy Roe’s Shrimp Shack. “We got an offer to relocate,” says Johnson. “It use to be the Island Clubhouse where the little putt-putt place is. We did a job on it and we’re real proud of how it looks now. Business in ten times better, and we’re doing all-local shrimp, along with burgers, chicken and hot dogs … that’s it.”

Buddy Roe’s has a small stage and dance area. They already have some weekend entertainment on the May schedule. Johnson performs solo this weekend, and again on Fri. May 8. Tuba Jim & Roy are set to play at 9 p.m. on Sat. May 9.

Fiery Ron's Home Team BBQ #2 on Sullivan’s Island

Posted by T. Ballard Lesemann on Tue, Apr 28, 2009 at 12:34 PM

Sullivan’s Island will soon have a new watering hole — and a barbecue joint — to enjoy. 716b/1240947499-hometeamsullivan_s_tbl_502_resized.jpg

Tony McKie, the main talent buyer and audio engineer at the original Fiery Ron’s Home Team BBQ (1205 Ashley River Road) tells us that the restaurant and music venue is very, very close to completing renovations at the old Bert’s Bar on Sullivan’s Island (2209 Middle Street) and opening the second location. McKie says that they plan to have everything set up and ready to fine-tune in time for a soft opening on Tues. May 5 — just in time for a casual Cinco de Mayo party, tentatively with some live bluegrass music.

McKie adds that they’ll feature most for the same menu items as the West Ashley location, but slightly expanded with a few more coastal-themed items.

I stopped by the Sullivan’s Island spot on Sunday to have a peek, and, indeed, there was a bustle of activity in the space, a small dumpster out front, and a shiny new, corrugated tin facade with a Home Team BBQ logo over the front door. Things looked pretty close to completion.

If everything goes well, the first official gigs will be on Wednesday, May 6th with the Bluegrass Ramblers and on Friday, May 8th with Augusta-based Americana band the Dew Hickeys, led by Col. Elmer E. Lee. More updates will show up at the Home Team BBQ web site soon. Upcoming performers include Guilt-Ridden Troubadour, Town Mountain, Jeff Norwood, The Christopher Dean Band, Blue Plantation, Betsy Franck & The Bareknuckle Band, Elise Testone & the Freeloaders, Milhouse, and Mayhem String Band.
