Cinco de Mayo/Uno de Mayo concert

The Charleston Cinco de Mayo Festival — set to actually take place on Fri. May 1 (that’s Uno de Mayo, si?) at the Charleston Visitor Center Bus Shed (375 Meeting St.) — features a pretty hot lineup of live entertainment this year. 52d1/1240849483-cincoposter.jpg

A 15-piece salsa group from Durham, N.C, called Orquesta GarDel (founded by David Garcia, a professor at UNC Chapel Hill) brings their “hurricane-force salsa” to the main stage. Local turntablist DJ Luigi (of Latin Groove) share the co-headlining bill with Mass.-based reggeton duo Taton y Tremendo, visiting in support of their new single “Ya No Se Puede.”

Additional entertainment includes a “Dancing with the Local Stars” segment with Ayoka Lucas, DJ Natty Heavy, and local news ladies Tracey Amick and Tara Lynn.

The Charleston Cinco de Mayo Festival was founded in 2006 with the goal to celebrate Mexican heritage and culture and encourage togetherness on the week of May 5. “The event provides an opportunity for Charleston residents to experience Hispanic food, dance, and music,” says the organizers.

The event takes place from 7-11 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 with a college student ID, and free for kids 12 and under. Food and drinks will be available for sale.
