The Ballad of Shovels and Rope heads to the Terrace for a night

Giddy up

Local Shovels & Rope fans should be tickled to know there will be a one-night-only showing of The Moving Pictures Boys’ film The Ballad of Shovels and Rope on Aug. 18 at the Terrace Theater. The Kickstarter-funded documentary follows the local husband-and-wife rock ‘n’ roll ramblers on the road to the top. Though the film has had recent screenings at the Newport Folk Festival, Indy Film Fest, Macon Film Festival, and the Nashville Film Festival, this will be the first peek for the Charleston public.

Monster Music will be set up at the screening to take pre-orders of ShoRo's Aug. 25 release Swimmin' Time, and the first 40 fans to purchase the album that night will also receive a limited-edition autographed copy of the record to be picked up from Monster on release day.

Co-producer and Shovels & Rope manager Paul Bannister will also be on hand for a Q&A session at the Terrace directly after the screening.

Director Jace Freeman and producers Sean Clark and Bannister closely watched the musicians for three years as they made “something out of nothing.” From the struggle of living out of a van, traveling from venue to venue, to the thrill of performing on the Late Show with David Letterman and winning big at last year’s Americana Music Awards, the rockumentary will likely give viewers a serious case of the feel-goods.

The Ballad of Shovels and Rope starts at 7:30 p.m., and advance tickets can be purchased now at the Terrace Theater.
