The deadline for volunteers and participants to apply for the fourth-annual Girls Rock Charleston is May 26, so get your applications for the July 14-18 session in now. Girls Rock is a week-long camp that provides a summer getaway for girls and transgender youth ages 13-17 who want to get to know a musical instrument. A camp focusing on instrument instruction and collaboration, Girls Rock is a unique experience offering workshops like songwriting, self-defense, band T-shirt screenprinting, and more. Instruments and supplies are provided to all campers, and every band formed gets to learn and play a song for the Girls Rock showcase on July 19 at the Music Farm. No musical experience is required for participants, counselors, or volunteers, and flexible hours and days are available for those volunteering. The junior counselor position is an exciting new addition to the camp, which “offers older campers the chance to be more involved,” says program coordinator Jenna Lyles.
