Award-winning songwriter Gillian Welch will perform April 27 at the Charleston Music Hall. Tickets are $35 and will go on sale Fri. April 4 at 10 a.m.

Welch, an accomplished guitarist, banjoist, and singer, is a rock star in certain musical circles, particularly in a town like Charleston with a growing folk and Americana scene. Backed by longtime musical accomplice Dave Rawlings on the guitar, Welch has been winning converts with her dark, understated take on old-time country and bluegrass since the mid-'90s. Two of her albums have been nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album, and she gained some new fans after appearing on the Grammy-winning platinum soundtrack to O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Welch and Rawlings are embarking on what the Music Hall is describing as a "spur-of-the-moment Southeast U.S. jaunt" that also includes stops in Charlotte, N.C.; Roanoke, Va.; Charlottesville, Va.; Durham, N.C.; and Bristol, Tenn.

Welch's latest album, 2011's The Harrow & The Harvest, came after an eight-year recording hiatus — and it was well worth the wait. Here's a fan-made video of her song "Hard Times" paired with footage from the 1973 film Paper Moon starring Tatum O'Neal.
