I knew what I was getting into when I went to John Mayer's concert last week at the N. Charleston Coliseum. I expected screaming girls, homemade signs, pop hits and some killer guitar solos. My expectations were right on point.

On tour in support of his most recent release, Paradise Valley, Mayer brought his songwriting and guitar chops to town with American Idol winner Phillip Phillips in tow. Included midway through the set was a great cover of J.J. Cale's "Call Me The Breeze". Soon after, his bandmates left the stage making way for Mayer to do a few solo numbers. He stood in front of the crowd alone with only an acoustic guitar. The Montana-based singer-songwriter delighted fans with a medley of his bigger radio hits, including "Daughters" and "Your Body Is A Wonderland." He jokingly said he would never play a medley of hits until he was older.

The evening ended with a fitting "Please Come Home For Christmas" and Mayer's perennial tune "Gravity".

Mayer was charming and genuine. He playfully chatted with the crowd between songs, and even wished someone in the audience happy birthday. While the screaming girls continued to go on about how hot he was or how much they loved this song or that song, it was Mayer's guitar work that stole the show. Most songs were adorned with extended guitar solos where he wasn't shy about showing off his skills.
