Kae G of the Charleston-based hip-hip outfit Savage Souls dropped us a line last week to let us know that he and his mic-mangling cohort Fortune the Mic Mangler will be headlining what they hope will be an exciting new series of shows as The Oasis. Starting Sat. April 20, The Oasis plans to host a night of rhythms and rhymes called, appropriately enough, Savage Saturdays, and the show will feature not only Kae G and Fortune, but the other members of the newly formed Holy City Hip-Hop Committee.

After the City Paper published a recent profile on Savage Souls, Kae G got to thinking about the sad state of hip-hop in Charleston and what to do about it. "After reading the piece you did on us in the paper, one of the main things that stuck with me was, after Fortune's declaration of how terrible the music scene in town was, you tagged on there that I admitted there was probably a lot of good music out there that we just aren't familiar with and so on, and that kind of stuck with me. That coupled with the fact that the main core group of artists we were doing shows with consistently all seemed down for the cause but we lacked a certain team like feel," Kae G says. "Not that we all needed to come together like Wu Tang, but I felt like maybe a loose grouping or at least a group 'brand' would help get the ball rolling and maybe lend to some organized moves toward growing the scene here, because, of course, if the scene grows we can as well as all involved." The end result: The Holy City Hip-Hop Collective.

If the 4/20 Savage Saturday show is a success, Kae G hopes that it will become a regular thing at the venue. He also says that the group is currently working on an ambitious mixtape project. "We will release a new track each Saturday for, give or take, 14 Saturdays. On the 15th Saturday, instead of releasing the 15th song, we will be releasing the mixtape in its entirety which will have some added extras on it that each individual song didn't have when it was released and a single track."

The new songs will be posted at savagesaturday.com. Very cool.
