Heyrocco’s Nathan Merli doesn’t care about trends. He doesn’t care about what’s cool — right here, right now. “Bands keep getting caught up in fads. They think they should sound like shit because it’s popular. We’re just trying to make honest music,” the Heyrocco singer-guitarist says. The jump from lo-fi to hi-fi is a well known rite of passage for the maturing indie band. Merli and his Heyrocco bandmates — Tanner Cooper (drums) and Chris Cool (bass) — have been playing together since their middle school in the Lowcountry, most notably in Coletrain with Sarah Cole, now of Sarah Cole and the Hawkes. “From the beginning, we were trying to get away from the Charleston sound of bands like Hootie and the Blowfish,” Merli says. “A big inspiration for us was the Working Title.” This year, Heyrocco plans to release a new as-yet-untitled EP and embark on an ambitious month-long tour.
