Some people head to the bar once the workday is done. Others return home and veg out in front of the boob tube. Blake Ohlson, an orthopedic surgeon who moonlights as a blues musician, prefers not to waste his energy on such things. So what's a successful surgeon to do with his free time? Gather some local talent and put out a record, that's what.

Ligero, the second brainchild of local swamp rockers Steel Petals, Ohlson (guitar), Shank Wilson (drums), and Jeff Narkiewicz (bass), was recorded over an eight-month period at the surgeon's own studio. The bandleader believes it is a harder, more thought out record.

Steel Petals also managed to snag some really cool, big name talent for Ligero. Brian Lucey, who worked on the past two Black Keys' records, as well as Eric Clapton's most recent disc, mastered Steel Petals' latest. If that's not impressive enough in itself, O.A.R. fans will get a kick out of hearing the band's Jerry DePizzo on the sax.

Steel Petals will hold a CD release party for Ligero at Awendaw Green on Fri. Oct. 12, with Lowcountry faves the South Carolina Broadcasters opening at 7 p.m. For more information, visit steelpetals.net and awendawgreen.com.
