At a fancy media event in the lobby of the North Charleston Performing Arts Center on March 27, North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey announced that legendary funk/jazz ensemble Earth, Wind & Fire is solid for a big show at the adjacent North Charleston Coliseum on Wed. June 26 at 7 p.m. The concert is a part of the city's 40th-year anniversary celebration.

"After 40 years, North Charleston has grown into a thriving city, bustling with business and prime for young families and professionals," Summey stated at the press conference. "To mark the advancements we have made, we are going first class in our 40th anniversary celebration. Both born of the ’70s — the City of North Charleston and Earth, Wind & Fire — we will be celebrating together with an exciting evening of shear entertainment combined with exceptional musicianship."

Earth, Wind & Fire formed in Chicago in 1969 and developed a brassy funk style infused with elements of soul, pop, rock, and fusion. The band’s powerful brass and woodwind players were known as the Phoenix Horns. They reached the top of the charts in the 1970s and early ’80s with such hits as "Mighty Mighty," "Shining Star," "September," "Boogie Wonderland," and "Let’s Groove." They were inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.

Led by three longtime members — vocalist Philip Bailey, bassist Verdine White, and percussionist Ralph Johnson‚ EW&F embark on their Guiding Lights Tour this summer in support of a new studio album titled Then and Forever (Legacy). They’ll perform at the Coliseum with the North Charleston Pops Orchestra with support from local pop/rock band the Explorer’s Club.

Tickets go on sale for between $25 and $45 at 10 a.m. on Fri. March 30 at 10 a.m. at the Coliseum box office, via Ticketmaster outlets, online at ticketmaster.com, or charge by phone at (800)745-3000. Tickets are $25-$45. Visit northcharlestoncoliseumpac.com and earthwindandfire.com for more.
