Stuart White, Lindsay Holler, and Michael Hanf
Percussionist/guitarist Michael Hanf spent several years performing and recording music with friends and colleagues in Charleston before relocating to New York City in 2010, but he recently struck up a new collaboration with singer/guitarist Lindsay Holler, an old bandmate from the Western Polaroids. Hanf will be handling guitar, vibraphone, and vocals.

“The project has been a pretty long-distance affair,” Holler says. “We’ve been writing songs and recording demos. Hopefully, by early 2012, we’ll be able to get some proper recording done. I’m really excited about the project.”

Holler and Hanf performed at the Tin Roof last week with backing from Stuart White, a drummer with whom Hanf played in the Pulse Trio. Holler and a new cast of Polaroids perform at the Tin Roof on Tues. Dec. 6. Hanf returns with a new set of original tunes for a solo gig at the Tin Roof on Thurs. Dec. 22.

Will Hastings headlines the Pre-Exam Jam

Seventeen70 Records presents local songwriters and bands

Will Hastings
The College of Charleston’s student-run record label Seventeen70 Records presents a local showcase at the Music Farm this week. Celebrating the release of his new single “Earlybird,” up-and-coming Nashville-bred/Charleston-based singer/songwriter Will Hastings will headline the event.

A group of budding music biz characters in CofC’s Arts Management department formed Seventeen70 earlier this year as part of their Getting Music to the Marketplace class. “We are committed to educating students in the music business and supporting local music,” says Heather McDonald, the professor of the class. “There are 21 students who worked together to select a single to release and book and promote this show. The record company is thrilled to be working with Will.”

Seventeen70 will continue next semester with a new group of students releasing a new single. Billed as the Pre-Exam Jam, Seventeen70’s Music Farm event will take place on Mon. Dec. 5 at 8 p.m. with live performances from Hastings, Old You, Master, and Shields and Morgan (featuring members of Long Miles). Admission is $5. Visit musicfarm.com and seventeen70records.tumblr.com for more.

Shrimp City Slim

Local blues singer/pianist Gary Erwin (a.k.a. Shrimp City Slim) recently completed a two-week tour of Holland, Poland, and France, and he’s gearing up for a busy fall and winter of solo and full-band gigs around the Lowcountry.

Erwin also recently independently released a new live album from an old concert. Highway 77: Lowcountry Blues Live (Vol 2), featuring tunes recorded at a full-band in 2000 at a gig in Charlotte, N.C. The collection is available online at shrimpcityslim.com.

Look and listen for Erwin every Wednesday evening at the Southern Seasons Grill in Summerville. Keep an eye out for ticket, venue, and artist updates on the 22nd Annual Lowcountry Blues Bash, the massive, multiple-venue, two-week festival Erwin organizes every February. See bluesbash.com for more.

Charleston cover band Weird Science usually cranks out pop and rock hits from the ’80s at full volume, but the quintet will perform a rare “unplugged” at the Windjammer on Sat. Dec. 3.

Singer/guitarist Jason Gantt, guitarist/keyboardist Jason Cooper, bassist Chris McLernon, drummer John Befumo, and lead guitarist Donnie Polk plan to play a variety of classics and deep cuts at a special gig called Ignorance is not Bliss: A Domestic Violence Awareness Event.

The fundraiser is presented by My Sister’s House, an organization that provides services, programs, and resources to victims of domestic violence and their children. The event includes a silent auction, a drawing, and drink specials, too.

A $10 donation will be requested at the door. Music starts at 9 p.m. Visit mysistershouse.com and the-windjammer.com for more.
