Torture Town Releases Mini-Album

Doug Walters offers some voodoo

Doug Walters is a busy guy. After releasing a solo experimental album titled Vagabond last fall, he’s ready to release his rock/punk outfit Torture Town’s new five-song mini-album Voodoo Woman.

While he did all the tracking and mixing work for Vagabond by himself, Walters got a little help on this one from drummer and engineer Jeff Mangan. The two started working on 16 songs over a year ago. Walters eventually decided to split up the tracks onto separate albums. Voodoo Woman is the first installment. Produced at Ocean Studios on James Island with engineer Jeff Leonard at the helm, the finished product doesn’t hold anything back, kicking you in the teeth with its punk savagery.

Walters, a City Paper contributor, defines Torture Town as a concept band, “using rock to address the most complex struggle of all: Man vs. Himself.” He thinks of it as a fun way “to remind people that they really are truly free” from the self-imposed torture towns in their own heads.

Check out the guy’s complex concepts at the CD release party May 21 at the Tin Roof alongside Atlanta’s James Hall and the Futura Bold and local indie-rock trio L. Brown Odyssey.
