The Lowcountry Blues Bash rolls into day two with a variety of acts playing around town.

One of the stand-out shows on the Friday evening (Feb. 4) schedule is legendary S.C. songwriter, guitarist, pianist, and singer Drink Small, the “Blues Doctor” of Bishopville. He’ll perform two sets at Fiery Ron’s Home Team BBQ (1205 Ashley River Road) at 9 p.m. His backing combo features John Picard on drums and Jerry Ray on bass. Admission is $5.

Drink Small has been singing the blues in his raspy voice and layin’ down his boogie on a hollow-bodied six-string named Geraldine since his early days in the 1950s. He’s is a recipient of the S.C. Folk Heritage Award and a member of the South Carolina Hall of Fame.

Blues Bash organizer Gary Erwin recently put a birthday show together for Small in his hometown. The 78th Birthday Celebration took place at the Bishopville Opera House in Jan. 28. “For many in this part of the country, Drink Small is their number one blues point-of-reference,” says Erwin. “He fell under the spell of music at an early age and achieved virtuosic talent on the guitar and piano. His singing voice is a pure basso profundo and has no equal in modern popular music.”

Small's latest album is titled Trying to Survive at 75. He's way past that sentiment, and already looking ahead to the next conceptual session.
