Joey Morant
Lowcountry jazz legends Joey Morant and Lonnie Hamilton will join forces for a collaborative concert on Fri. Nov. 5 at Magnolia Gardens. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Jenkins Orphanage.
Jazz played a large role in the Orphanage’s history, notably with the success of the Jenkins Orphanage Band, South Carolina’s first all black instrumental group. The ensemble gained prominence in the 20th century, playing presidential inaugural parades and touring internationally.
Brass instrumentalist Morant headlines the benefit, collaborating with saxophonist Hamilton, vocalist Lisa Montgomery, and other. In addition to the music, the event hosts an open bar, a silent auction, and artwork by Jonathan Green and Phillip Simmons.
Named the 2003 Harlem Jazz and Music Festival Instrumentalist of the Year, Morant has performed with Tina Turner, Paul McCartney, James Brown, and others. Both Hamilton and Morant are members of the Harlem Blues and Jazz Band, an established ensemble of classic jazz and blues musicians. Tickets are $75 per couple until Oct. 31, $100 after. Individual tickets are $50. For more info, visit firstfederal.com. —Jansen Cumbie
