Doobies Smokin’ Again

The Doobie Brothers
Veteran West Coast pop/rock band the Doobie Brothers are solid for a show at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center on Sun. Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.

If you tune into classic rock radio on a regular basis, you’d probably agree that the Doobies are universally held in esteem as one of the ultimate American rock bands of the 1970s. Part of a wave of hippie-oriented California bands of the early ’70s, the Doobies dabbled in acoustic ballads, electric guitar-driven rockers, positive vibes, and soulful (and sometimes complex) harmonies. Through the years, they had a string of gold and platinum albums and numerous radio hits, including “Listen to the Music,” “Black Water,” “China Grove,” “Long Train Runnin’,” “Black Water,” and “Jesus is Just Alright.”

The band recently released World Gone Crazy, their first album in 10 years. The album reunites them with producer Ted Templeman, who was behind the console for their studio work albums in the ’70s. The disc’s first single, “Nobody,” is a re-recording of their first-ever single from in 1971. The current lineup features lead singer/guitarist Tom Johnston with Guy Allison (keys), John McFee (guitar, strings), Marc Russo (sax), John Cowan (bass), Pat Simmons (guitar), and a rotation of drummers.

Reserved seats for the Doobies’ show go on sale for $39.50 (plus fees) at 10 a.m. on Fri. Oct. 15. They’ll be available at the box office, Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at (800) 745-3000, and online at ticketmaster.com. A limited number of Gold Circle seats are available, too.
