Acclaimed trumpeter and musical director Wynton Marsalis will lead the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) — a versatile big band comprised of “15 of the finest jazz soloists and ensemble players today” — through a concert at the Gaillard Municipal Auditorium (77 Calhoun St.) on Fri. Jan. 16.
The JLCO has been the Jazz at Lincoln Center resident orchestra for over 12 years. Featured in all aspects of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s programming, it performs and leads educational events in New York, across the U.S. and around the globe. Tickets are available for $35 and $100. Proceeds from the world-class event benefit the Charleston Concert Association’s education program. Show time is 7:30 p.m.
On Thurs. Jan. 29, the Savannah Music Festival (SMF) brings Marsalis and JLCO back to the region for an intimate benefit concert at the Lucas Theatre for the Arts. Sponsored by Local 11 Ten, the event is the Festival’s only fundraiser for the 2009 season. Tickets are available for between $65 and $250 online at www.savannahmusicfestival.org or through the Trustees Theater box office at 912-525-5050.
