Ray’s BBQ in Mt. Pleasant: closed down

Say it ain’t so, Ray! This morning, word came into the office that Ray’s BBQ at 440 W. Coleman Boulevard (near Shem Creek) had officially closed down. A small group of us just ate huge feast of a lunch there last week and there were no signs of trouble to found. Furniture expert-turned restaurateur Ray Waldrup opened the business in March. The yellow-painted building stood out as a funky spot along the Coleman string of businesses. The menu specialized in hickory-smoked pork and chicken, with an emphasis on Carolina-styled sauces and additional hints of Gulf Coast flavors.

This afternoon, we saw the announcement on a sheet of paper taped to the front door, which read:

“Out of business. Due to the declining economy, I’ve been forced to close. Thanks to all my loyal customers and the new friends I have made. My e-mail is raysbbq@gmail.com if you need to reach me.”

What a shame. The place was consistently friendly and delicious. Good luck to Ray and all.

Yea, I would put a few more local businesses on the Seafood Restaurants and Businesses map, but some of the locations change hands so many times, it'd be a full time job in itself :-)
