843 Korean BBQ & Sushi House opens in North Charleston on April 19

And there's a karaoke bar

Owners Davis and Jessica Hong have been working on retrofitting the former Carey Hilliard's Restaurant into 843 Korean BBQ & Sushi House for more than a year now. "We had to dig out one dining hall to put in Korean barbecue tables with grills and exhaust vents and duct work," Jessica explains, adding that construction workers and city officials found the Korean barbecue accoutrements a bit baffling.
"This is the first time anyone has seen it this kind of stuff in Charleston," she adds. "They were like, 'What is that? And why are you going to cook your own meat at the table. We really had to convince people that this is very normal, for one, and that it's an interactive way for people to enjoy their meal."

Local fans of Korean barbecue, however, need no convincing. Since posting 843's opening news on Facebook this morning, Jessica says she's been slammed with calls for reservations. "Next week is almost all booked," she says.

Davis, who trained in hotel hospitality in Switzerland and worked at Kiawah's Sanctuary, will run the kitchen, while Jessica works front of house. 843 will feature two separate rooms, one with 10 Korean barbecue tables, and another for sushi and other Korean dishes. "We'll also have a karaoke bar and we have a Sunday liquor license," says Jessica. The couple plans to eventually open for lunch two months or so after opening.

Until then, 843 Korean BBQ & Sushi House will be open Tues.-Thurs. from 4-10 p.m., Fri. from 4-midnight, Sat. & Sun. from 4-11 p.m., and Sun. 4-10 p.m. They'll be closed on Mondays.
