Charleston’s on something of a dessert kick lately what with the boom in sweet shop openings. In February Luckhaus & Brubaker Sweets & Treats opened on Maybank Highway, in August Ragamuffin Sugarshop started up on Rivers Avenue, this fall Carmella’s Dessert Bar opened on East Bay, pastry chef Judy Papadimitriou recently started Pies, Cakes, & S’more, and now Avondale has a new dessert bar — Gala Desserts at 829 Savannah Hwy. (in the former location of Lava Salon).

Owner and Executive Pastry Chef Jaclyn Story, formerly of Maverick Southern Kitchens, Kaminsky’s, Normandy Farm, and Michaelangelo’s Kitchen, says Gala is something she’s been dreaming up for a long time.

“Charleston has so many great restaurants, but there aren’t many options for an upscale dessert place to go after dinner,” she says. “Avondale is so central, I’m really hoping it will draw people from all over.”

In addition to bites like chocolate pralines, peanut butter tortes, lemon pistachio panna cotta, almond joy, and eggnog cheesecake (to name a few), Gala will offer cocktail, beer, and wine with dessert pairing suggestions.

Gala Desserts is now open Wed. and Thurs. from 2-10 p.m. and Fri.-Sat. from 2 p.m.-midnight.
