We’ve been waiting for this one to become official, and now it appears that everything is in order: King Street is getting a fish and chips shop. Mushy Peas will open at 363 King Street in about four to five weeks.
“I’ve been coming to Charleston for a long time and I can’t get a decent fish and chips,” says owner Kevin Bradley. The former head of Eastern Moldings (the largest producer of traffic cones according to Bradley) grew up in London. Since moving to the U.S. he’s been longing for a proper chipper. “I’ve been missing a good London style, well, we’d call them cafes, you’d call them bistros. That’s where this idea comes from,” he says.
He hopes Mushy Peas will fill that void. But Bradley says, it’ll serve more than just the classic British dish. “We’ll have afternoon tea each Wednesday from 3-6 p.m. and we’ll serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner,” he tells us. Bradley also says tea will include scones with plenty of clotted cream, and of course, mushy peas will also be on the menu, too.
The building, formerly Pace's Pizza Balls
, is getting a makeover too, which may or may not include a classic London black cab. Mushy Peas will serve beer and wine. But it's not going to be a pub. “It is going to be a great place to meet and greet. It’s for all ages not just for youngsters and for the old,” says Bradley.
