The 20th-Century cocktail, the Negroni, was first created in Florence, Italy, by an Italian nobleman Count Negroni who insisted that his favorite cocktail, the Americano, was no longer strong enough and needed something extra, according to the book Sulle Tracce del Conte: La Vera Storia del Cocktail Negroni. Upon Count Negroni’s request, the bartender obeyed and added gin. Appropriately the Negroni was born and named after its creator. This week restaurants all around Charleston are celebrating this classic cocktail. For the Second Annual Negroni Week (through June 8), nine bars and restaurants will donate the proceeds from the cocktail to various charities.

Sponsored by Imbibe magazine and Campari, Charleston favorites such as the Bay Street Biergarten, La Tabella, Mac’s Place, Sermet’s Downtown, The Green Goat, Wild Olive, and the Macintosh are supporting Chase After A Cure’s childhood cancer research with every Negroni purchase. The Beirgarten and La Tabella will donate a dollar of each cocktail sale to their charity. At Indaco the proceeds will go to Slow Food Charleston, a chapter of Slow Food USA, a group dedicated to creating a positive and lasting change in America’s food system. Social Restaurant + Wine Bar is honoring Make-A-Wish Foundation, and Warehouse’s profits will go to the Palmetto Medical Initiative, a project that provides sustainable health-care to those in need in developing countries.
