McAlister's Deli doesn't play around when it comes to its trademarked sandwich the Big Nasty. They've been sending out cease and desist letters to restaurants using the name. In Atlanta, Rosebud
changed the name of their menu item from the Big Nasty to the Nasty McAlister.
In Charleston, Chef Robert Stehling at Hominy Grill is a bit more laid-back about the ceasing and desisting. Instead of fighting, he is having a renaming contest for their Big Nasty
breakfast sandwich — a sausage-gravy laden fried chicken breast with cheddar cheese between a mile-high biscuit.
For the contest
, diners are invited to submit their new name by Jan. 29 to firstname.lastname@example.org. Check out their Facebook page
to see some of the current submissions (Hot Mess, Suicide by Biscuit, Button Popper, etc.).
The best part of the contest is the prizes. First place gets breakfast with Stehling, two nights at Wild Dunes Resort, and a punch card for 25 of the newly named breakfast sandwiches. That's a lot of nasty.
