On Aug. 17, 2012, Raul's Taqueria and Mexican Grill announced on Facebook that it would be closing its popular North Charleston shop. Since then Raul Sanchez has been hosting a number of pop-up dinners around town, most recently completing a Sunday dinner stint at Butcher & Bee. But we were all left wondering when would he get his own kitchen. Lucky for us, that time is nigh.
Sanchez plans to open Maya del Sol in Park Circle the week of Oct. 20
His new restaurant is a bit of a change from his previous one and won't have any indoor seating — just a window and a kitchen. There'll be places to sit outside or you can take it to go.
The varied menus — lunch and a different dinner menu every weekend — will be a combination of popular items from his restaurant and pop-up dinners. Dishes like the mole poblano, carne en su jugo (a chili, stew, soup combo), and the stuffed peppers will always be on the menu, but he'll change up other options on a regular basis.
While the Day of the Dead decor from his old shop won't be on display, he will deck out his new place in to celebrate the holiday during the month of November.
And yes, he'll be opening for brunch (which some CP
staffers swear to be the best in Charleston). Get in line for some rosemary pancakes and huevos rancheros.
Maya del Sol is located at 1012 E. Montague Ave. and will be open for lunch Mondays through Fridays from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., and for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Sunday brunch will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Is it too early to put our order in for the huevos?
