Westbrook and LJ Woods Farm put on a local Meat Beer Fire event

Meat plus beer plus fire equals goodness squared

Some of the South's most important traditions crank up in the fall: barbecuing at a tailgate before the football game, roasting hot dogs around the bonfire, and, of course, sharing a autumnal beer or four with a friend. Saturday’s Meat Beer Fire LOCAL event at the Westbrook Brewing Company (noon-5 p.m.) combines all the best things about fall in Charleston.

Westbrook is partnering with Brad Taylor and Catherine Compton of LJ Woods Farm and Revival Foods in Sylvania, Ga., to promote local organic farm-raised animals, and Westbrook’s Bearded Farmer #4 series, named Taylor, will get tapped for the occasion.

“We name each saison, which is a farmhouse ale, after one of the local farmers that picks up our spent grain and uses it to feed their livestock,” says Morgan Westbrook. “We have great respect for what Brad and Catherine are doing and want to be a part of that. Together we are promoting local goodness, great food, and in our humble opinion, great beer.”

Taylor will be on hand for the event, cooking up a whole heirloom pig that’s been raised humanely on his farm. You can taste the smoked goodness for $5 or $10 for a meat and two sides. They’ll also have favorites like Westbrook IPA, White Thai, One Claw, Gose, Bearded Farmer #3: Thomas, and Citrus Ninja on tap.
