Lambs and Clams recipe voting ends tonight

You can never have enough lambs and clams in your life. The BB&T Charleston Wine and Food Festival has partnered with our favorite shepherd Craig Rogers of Border Springs Farm and Travis Croxton of Rappahannock Oysters for a Lambs & Clams Original Recipe contest.

Eight top food bloggers from around the country will compete using their culinary creativity to craft unique recipes around the theme. There will be four monthly challenges, beginning this month and ending in January.

The contest is the shepherd's brainchild. “This is the first time we have incorporated bloggers into the festival. We wanted to find people who are influential and have participated in competitions, people that are not professionals yet still crafting their own recipes,“ says Ashley Zink, w+f's director of communications. Your vote through the Festival’s Facebook page will join that of the panel of judges, where local Kevin Johnson of The Grocery joins nationally renowned food critics like Bonnie Benwick of the Washington Post and Kat Kinsman of CNN Eatocracy.

The first challenge has commenced and features a leg of lamb. Check out blogger Olga Berman’s Lamb and Butternut Squash Wonton Ravioli or Cecilia Stoute's Massaman Curry. Photos and recipes are available to encourage voters to try the recipe themselves. “Lamb is something that can be really intimidating for home cooks, so it’s a definitely a way for these bloggers to show off its versatility for all sorts of things, not just fancy holiday meals,” says Zink. “The recipes will likely be simple and creative, meals that aren’t intimidating for people to recreate.”

Next, the contestants move into oysters and lamb shoulder. Finally, the bloggers will test their creativity with the surf and turf combination of lamb and clams. The prize for the overall winner is a trip to the 2012 Wine & Food Festival, the annual celebration of local food culture and awarded chefs now ranked as a top festival by Forbes Traveler. Once there, the winner will have their recipe prepared at the popular Pinot Envy Uncorked event by Charleston GI and The Local Palate.
