Today was a good day, as far as free samples showing up on my desk go.

I walked in this morning to a bottle of pecan pie-flavored liqueur from the Firefly Distillery, part of a new line of Southern Accents Liqueurs, which also comes in Banana Pudding and Peach Cobbler flavors.

According to the accompanying press release, the liqueurs are now available in South Carolina and are being made by the Firefly folks out on Wadmalaw. After lunch, we sampled a small shot of the pecan pie flavor and were pleasantly surprised. It was sweet and nutty and would be perfect in a cup of hot coffee. Kind of like Bailey's but without all that cream. I'll be sending the bottle home with spirits expert Erica Curran for a sampling. She'll report back on the following recipe:

Pecan Souffle
1 oz. Southern Accents Pecan Pie
1/2 oz. Firefly Sweet Tea Bourbon
1 oz. Cream
Blend ingredients and dust with fresh nutmeg.

Another taste we got came courtesy of Kellie Sams Clarke, owner of Carolina Belle Specialty Foods, who is packaging and selling Holy City Salsa. She left some fresh tortilla chips and a couple tubs of salsa on my desk for us to try.

Clarke is a mother of four, who began making salsa at home since the ones in the grocery store pretty much suck. Holy City Salsa is a clean, bright mix of tomatoes, sweet onion, cucumber, yellow onion, lemon juice, lime juice, jalapeƱos, and cilantro. She says she started mixing it up by the gallon for friends and family. I can understand why they started bringing their mason jars over for refills. It's tasty. She says you can find it in area Piggly Wiggly stores. Pick up a tub and try it. It's Certified S.C.
