Gearing up for Eat Local Month

Eating local is all about supporting farms, reducing your carbon footprint, getting your hands on the freshest food possible, and eating right. There's really nothing better than a fresh bunch of asparagus picked by the friendly Pete Ambrose out on Wadmalaw Island.

In April, you'll get your chance to show your support of guys like Pete during Eat Local Month, an inaugural month-long celebration of local food coordinated by Lowcountry Local First.

First, on April 4, the City Paper will be putting out our second issue of Dirt, the Lowcountry's local food guide, which will have articles on various topics (asparagus!) along with a resource directory of local food providers. The issue will also include LLF's map of local farms (see info about farm tours below).

Then, on Sat., April 7, the All You Should Eat Breakfast at Butcher & Bee will feature a menu of local and seasonal fare from area farms.

The following Saturday, April 14, LLF will lead a farm tour of Johns and Wadmalaw islands. Farms will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and food trucks will be at various sites along the way as you guide yourself through the route.

The Chef's Potluck returns for the fifth year and will once again take place at Middleton Place with chefs like Matt Russell from EVO, Mike Lata from FIG, Frank Lee from SNOB, Fred Neuville from Fat Hen, and John Zucker of Cru Café partnering with growers to prepare all-local dishes. This is a great event under the big oaks. The Garage Cuban Band will provide the tunes. Firefly, COAST, and Grassroots Distributors will provide the spirits, beer, and wine, respectively.

Not only is Eat Local Month raising awareness for our local farmers, it's also raising funds for LLF's sustainable agricultural initiatives, including the state's first incubator farm.

At the end of the month, the Charleston Green Fair is hosting the Carolina Dirt Fair, a weekend full of workshops, competitions, and cooking demos. On Friday, April 27, they'll have a cook-off at GrowFood Carolina followed by the Wild & Scenic Film Festival on Saturday at James Island County Park. On Sunday, at Mullet Hall on Johns Island, they'll have the Dirt Fair, with Acheson giving some cooking demonstrations on using seasonal ingredients. There will also be plenty of family-friendly activities.
