Closing, Opening, and Renovating, a dining out scorecard

January is a good time to freshen up

Your intrepid team of food writers here at the CIty Paper are currently fork-deep in Dish research, which we dug into very late this year. Hence, if you see mad-dashing diners across the city, you can be sure it's one of us. What makes dining out particularly difficult this time of year is the number of restaurants that close for renovations.

For instance, Circa 1886 has closed their doors to spruce things up and will be back in business just in time for Restaurant Week (Jan. 14-22).

Conversely, Cru Café will close for renovations just in time for Restaurant Week, planning renovations from Jan. 16-Jan. 24.

Chai's closed on New Year's Day and will reopen at an undisclosed date with an undisclosed new concept.

Moe's Crosstown closed for renovations back in November with the promise of opening as soon as possible. They're still closed up with no word on when they'll be done.

A favorite spot of ours — indeed the place we regularly nurse hangovers away — closed for good last week. DB's Cheesesteaks, Burgers, and Fries had a papered-over window last Thursday night, which we noticed as we dropped into Mondo's Delite for a revisit. Over the weekend, we confirmed that they have indeed closed for good. That leaves the Best Cheesesteak competition wide open this year for close competitor — Philly's — to swoop in and claim the title.

Of course, closings aren't all we have to look forward to every January. It's also a busy time of year for new places to pop up. This week, you can expect to see Barsa in the former Shine space opening along with the Patat Spot on George Street (more on both of those new spots will be coming later).
