Tristan tries to figure out ways to get butts in seats

Times are tough, and that's most apparent in the fine dining rooms of Charleston. During the F+W fest, I talked to a lot of chefs, restaurateurs, and others in the industry, and they all said, "It's bad. It's real bad."

I heard one horrifying rumor that a local dining room had zero patrons show up on a Friday night. That's zero covers on a Friday night. I can't imagine a more nauseating feeling than being the staff waiting around for someone, anyone to show up.

Has it turned around yet? That depends on who you talk to. But many restaurants refuse to give up and are trying their damnedest to get people into their dining rooms.

We saw the abundance of food deals during January and February. Many of those half-price wine offers still stand. And now, Tristan has announced a completely new menu.

The press release says they want to lift our spirits by offering us deals, but we suspect they really just want people to come in and eat and drink.

A breakdown of the deals at Tristan:

  • $2 Martini Wednesdays, 5-7 p.m.
  • A la carte entrée options start at $18 and do not exceed $28
  • A new chef-driven prix fixe option on the menu:  three courses (cold appetizer, entrée and dessert) for $30;  four courses  (cold and hot appetizer, entrée and dessert) for $40; or a custom designed six course tasting menu for $69.
  • Half-off select bottles of wine on Monday and Tuesday evenings
