Boathouse on East Bay Closes

Posted by Stephanie Barna on Mon, Jan 5, 2009 at 2:05 PM

Crew Carolina has "strategically realigned" its assets, announcing to staff today that the Boathouse on East Bay is closed, effective immediately.

Spokesperson Batt Humphreys says about 40 employees have been affected by the closing. Some of them will be furloughed and potentially rehired at its new location on James Island’s Ellis Creek, which is scheduled to open Feb. 17.

Executive Chef Charles Arena will remain with Crew Carolina and helm the kitchen at the new location.

Humphreys says it’s been a hard day — “this is not a pleasant thing to do” — and adds that the company is trying its best to find assignments within the catering division and at its other restaurants, Carolina’s and the Boathouse at Breach Inlet, for some key people.

“The fortunate thing is that, although we have to close this restaurant, there is an opportunity out there and they have the first opportunity to reapply and reassess,” says Humphreys.
