Sure there’s an appreciation month for everything, but here’s one we can get behind: Jazz Appreciation Month. Jazz Artists of Charleston is celebrating with a kick-off today at their new location, the Charleston Jazz House at 93 Spring St., Suite A. Stop by this evening at 5 p.m. for Dr. Karen Chandler’s talk, “From Franklin Street to 125th Street.” Then, starting at 7 p.m., pay-what-you-will to see the Singleton/Slater duo of Charlton Singleton on trumpet and James Slater on guitar perform.

Tuesday the fest continues with a 4 p.m. talk from Lotus Healing Center’s Abigail McClam on self-care followed by mini massage treatments open to the public (you read that right). Then at 7 p.m. another pay-what-you-will performance takes place by the Gino Castillo Quartet (Gino Castillo on vocals and percussion; Simon Harding on sax; Trey Cooper on piano; and Brett Belanger on bass).

And on Wednesday the holistic talks continue with Blue Heron Acupuncture and Apothecary's Lisa Abernathy and Lauren Becker discussing “Eating for Spring: A Chinese Medical Approach to Health” at 4 p.m., followed this time by mini acupuncture treatments. Finally, in honor of the third annual JAC day (as proclaimed by Mayor Riley in April 2009) the organization continues the party around 7 p.m. with poetry from Marcus Amaker and a performance from Robert Lewis (saxophone), Gerald Gregory (piano), and Ron Wiltrout (drums).
