Trying to break your way into the cold, hard world of publishing? Already have a book, but trying to reach a bigger audience? Want to help your authors gain a digital presence? Charleston’s PubSmart, a three-day conference of panels and masterclasses, will be discussing these topics and more this spring from April 16-18.

Thirty editors, legal experts, and publishers from companies like CreateSpace, Penguin Random House, and Where Writers Win will be holding presentations about the changing world of print. Subjects include tips on how to navigate copyright law, write bestsellers, pick the right editor, and use social media to one’s advantage.

“What's critical to us is to bring together insiders who can really speak to authors and small publishers and give them the tools to be in the driver’s seat with their own publishing strategies,” explains PubSmart’s Shari Stauch. “There’s never been a more exciting, or confusing, time to be an author. We want to unravel the confusion and propel the excitement.”

Keynote speakers Hugh Howey, bestselling, self-published author of the WOOL series, and Jane Friedman, former publisher of Writer’s Digest, will discuss success from both sides of the book business.

Stauch says that it’s easy to get overwhelmed in today’s publishing world because of the move to online, but also believes that the new dynamic can be used as an advantage. “The main issue is publishing smart. It means choosing an avenue — whether it’s self or traditional or a hybrid — that’s right for your project and then using the best discoverability tools to bring it to the market.”

Tickets for the conference go on sale Nov. 15 and include access to all of the main discussions as well as to video recordings of each session. Upgrade to VIP tickets for two masterclasses, or just add one to your basic ticket. You can buy tickets to PubSmart and find out more on pubsmartcon.com.
