The spotlight is searching for Charleston’s top stage presences of the 2012-2013 theatre season. Theatre Charleston has announced the nominees for their first-of-their-kind Theatre Charleston Awards, and the winners will be revealed Sun. Aug. 25 at the Theatre Awards Gala.

The 20 categories for the Awards range from all areas of production, from behind-the-scenes to directing to leading and supporting roles. Each category has between eight and 10 nominees. For outstanding play, for example, the nominees include: 33 Variations by Threshold Repertory Theatre, Clybourne Park by PURE Theatre, Driving Miss Daisy by Midtown Productions, Gidion's Knot by South of Broadway Theatre Company, Hamlet by Holy City Shakespeare, Much Ado About Nothing by The Flowertown Players, Red Light Winter by the Footlight Players, and The Whipping Man by The Village Repertory Co. For a full list of nominees in every category, visit Theatre Charleston's website.

The trophy design for the awards, by Simeon Warren from the American College of Building Arts, will be unveiled next week.

Tickets to Theatre Charleston's Awards Gala at the Woolfe Street Playhouse are on sale now online. The extravaganza will feature food from Cast Iron Catering, an open bar, live entertainment from some of Charleston’s choice actors, and a chance to celebrate Lowcountry theatre at its finest.
