History has a reputation — the boring, snore-inducing kind. And when you add historical buildings into the mix, the snores can sometimes get louder. If the smell of mothballs is accompanying your yawns, the Preservation Society of Charleston wants you to stop and give their take on a history a chance.

This year the Preservation Society of Charleston continues to celebrate the Holy City’s unique history — and their 37th year — with a brand new set of Fall Tours around town. Unlike the years before, the tours this year will be themed. Examples of these themes include Wednesday afternoon’s garden lunch lecture followed by a garden themed tour, Thursday evening’s overview tours of architectural types found all over Charleston, and Friday’s neighborhood tours that will take guests into some of Charleston’s finest planned neighborhoods.

The Preservation Society of Charleston’s Marketing and Communications Manager, Katherine Ferguson stated that the society wanted to change up the tours because, “we really wanted to add more history to tell the story of the Charleston area in a cleaner way to enhance the visitor’s experience.” Ferguson is also hoping that the change will attract more locals to the tours. ”Traditionally about 80 percent of our tours are people from out of town. We would really like to teach locals more about where we live too.”

She is also planning on the tours to attract different demographics to the tours. “Our usual audience are educated, married females around 50 years old. With the newer and more enriching tours I think we will attract more young people and young locals.” The Fall Tours run from Oct. 3-Oct. 27. For more information visit preservationsociety.org.
