Theater people are notorious for being more dramatic than the shows they put on, but the even-tempered people of Next Stage are trying to change that.

Next Stage is the combined effort of two theater companies: Summerville’s Flowertown Players and North Charleston’s South of Broadway. The collaboration will result in a cast comprising both Flowertown’s local talent and South of Broadway’s professionals. The actors will save the drama for the stage — or in their case, stages, because Next Stage’s innovative twist on the joint production is that each show will be performed at two vastly different venues.

They’re currently in preparations to perform Jean Paul Sartre’s No Exit at South of Broadway’s small, interactive black box theater in August. After that, they’ll take the production to Flowertown’s larger, more traditional theater for additional performances in September. The same format will be used for a collaborative production of Harold Pinter’s Betrayal in February and March. See flowertownplayers.org/nextstage for more info.
