One Cool Blow Opening Celebration

The folks at Charleston's newest development invited hundreds of people up to the neck on Thursday night to check out the new digs. The curiously-named (anyone got some inside info on that?) mixed-use loft-style condos are lean, green, and very industrial, with concrete floors and walls and exposed pipes. Some of the unfurnished condos seemed downright cold and unwelcoming, but peeking into some of the furnished spaces inspired visions of living in a New York-style loft in Charleston. The bright green doors of each space open into an open center courtyard, motel style, and some of the windows open to the center as well — arguably a better view than the industrial wasteland that makes up the neighborhood these days. The rooftop patio offered an expansive view of the peninsula and the Cooper River Bridge, and a DJ was spinning to show just how cool the place is. (Now it would be really cool if they had a full-time DJ on the roof.) Taco Boy catered the event with pork tacos and giant, heavenly vats of guacamole and cheese dip — we can't wait til they open their downtown location. The final judgement between my friend and I is that we'd prefer to live in a classic single house further down the peninsula, but we wouldn't mind having a boyfriend living at One Cool Blow. And there were plenty of hot young professionals checking out the place.

really nice-looking condos and a great concept, but to be honest i'm puzzled as to why they would build in such a crummy-looking part of town. i think i'd be too concerned with security issues to really enjoy living there. i don't claim to know much of anything about real estate, but i wonder if this development will spark significant improvements in that area, or if the area will just cause the property to depreciate quickly.

These condos are a great step in the revitalization of the northern neighborhood of downtown charleston. Like any city, it is dealing with criminal activity, but this area is quickly becoming home to many students and young professionals due to its affordability, charm, great parks, views, shopping, and access to all that downtown charleston has to offer.

I doubt if too many people have lost money investing in Charleston's up-and-coming areas in the past 10 years. Just ask the folks around Upper King Street.
